The mediation process

Mediation keeps you at the centre of decision-making.

Rather than having outcomes imposed, you are supported to explore options and reach agreements that feel fair, practical and sustainable.

Although mediation is flexible and tailored to your needs, the flow chart on this page offers a visual overview of the mediation journey, so you know from the start what happens next.

How mediation typically progresses:

• Get in touch to ask questions and book a MIAM.

• Each person attends a separate, confidential MIAM.

• The mediator assesses whether mediation is suitable.

• If appropriate, both people are invited to attend joint sessions.

• You discuss the issues that matter most, at a pace that works for you.

• The mediator helps keep conversations constructive and focused.

• Financial information is shared openly where needed.

• Options are explored and practical agreements are worked towards.

• The mediator prepares a written summary of what you have agreed* (see costs page for more details).

• You can then choose to make your agreement legally binding, if required.
